Defence ProAc (DPA)- ATK is relatively new entrant in Indian Defence segment, can you please throw some light on brief background and main groups in ATK?
Jeff Jenny (JJ)- ATK is an aerospace, defense and commercial products company that operates in 22 states, Puerto Rico and internationally. The company is divided into three business groups ATK Aerospace Group, ATK Defense Group and ATK Sporting Group.
ATK Aerospace Group
ATK Aerospace Group is the world's top producer of solid rocket propulsion systems and a leading supplier of military and commercial aircraft structures. It also specializes in small and micro-satellites; satellite components and subsystems; lightweight space deployables and solar arrays; low-cost, quick-to-market launch solutions; flares and decoys; and energetic materials and related technologies. The group has extensive experience supporting human and space payload missions.
ATK Defense Group
ATK Defense Group is an industry leader in ammunition, precision and strike weapons, missile-warning solutions, and tactical rocket motors across air, sea and land-based systems. The group is the largest U.S. producer of small-caliber ammunition, as well as a leading producer of medium- and large-caliber ammunition and medium-caliber gun systems. ATK Defense Group develops advanced capabilities for missile-defense interceptors, fuzing and warheads, weaponized special-mission aircraft, and propulsion/controls. The group also brings extensive experience and expertise in defense facility management and modernization.
ATK Sporting Group
ATK Sporting Group is the established market leader in sporting and law enforcement ammunition, tactical and shooting accessories, and sporting firearms. The group serves sport-shooting enthusiasts, law enforcement professionals, military and tactical markets worldwide. Our products include some of the most widely known and respected brands in the industry.
DPA- What are the main sub division in ATK defence group, production facilities and their product Range?
JJ- ATK's Defense Group is comprised of four divisions. They are:
Armament Systems—designs, develops and produces precision weapons, medium and large caliber ammunition, medium caliber cannons, and advanced programs, which is creating next generation capabilities for the warfighter including advanced force protection capabilities such as barrier and counter mobility munitions.
Small Caliber Systems—manages the operations of North America's largest small caliber ammunition production facility, Lake City Army Ammunition Plant located in Lake City, Missouri.
Missile Products—designs, develops and produces tactical propulsion systems for military applications (rockets and missiles). Manages the production facilities located at Allegheny Ballistics Laboratory at Rocket Center, West Virginia. The division also operates New River Energetics (NRE) at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant in Radford, VA. NRE loads, assembles and packs 25 mm, 30 mm and LW30 mm ammunition for Armament Systems. The site also is the location for distribution of TNT and other energetic materials. Our team conducts energetics research and development, and NRE is the technology provider for the modernization of the energetics manufacturing facility in Mulwala, Australia.
Defense Electronic Systems—is a leading developer of next-generation SEAD/DEAD weapon systems and missile-warning and aircraft survivability solutions. In addition, the division is a provider of special-mission aircraft integration and support, aerial targets and training systems. The products within ATK Defense Electronic Systems include: the Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile, the Joint and Allied Threat Awareness System, the AN/AAR-47 Missile Warning System, AC-208 Combat Caravan and Light Gunship.
DPA- Which are the key markets ATK is currently engaged with and elaborate on some of the main programmes in these markets?
JJ- ATK Armament Systems produces a complete family of medium-caliber training and tactical ammunition that meets today's requirements and serves as the cornerstone for tomorrow's Future Combat Systems. ATK medium-caliber ammunition can be fired from Apache helicopters, A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft, and Bradley infantry-fighting vehicles. Outstanding reliability, accuracy and lethality make our 20 mm, 25 mm, and 30 mm rounds effective in anti-armor, anti-materiel, anti-personnel, ground suppression, air defense and shipboard-defense applications.
The products within ATK Armament Systems include: the Mortar Guidance Kit and Precision Guidance Kit, tank ammunition for smooth and rifled bore main guns, the Mk44 30 mm Bushmaster® Chain Gun®, the 25 mm M242 Bushmaster® Automatic Cannon and the M230 LW30 Bushmaster® Cannon.
The products within ATK Defense Electronic Systems include: the Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile, the Joint and Allied Threat Awareness System, the AN/AAR-47 Missile Warning System, AC-208 Combat Caravan and Light Gunship.
Missile Products Division manages a broad portfolio of progressive and high performance programs, including: Tactical Propulsion, Fuzing and Warheads, Missile Defense, Upper Stages and Controls, Tactical Subsystems, and Advanced Systems and Power.
The division operates three world class manufacturing and testing facilities, as well as several satellite offices in the following locations: Baltimore, MD; Elkton, MD; Newington, VA; Plymouth, MN; Rocket Center, WV; Ronkonkoma, NY; San Jose, CA and West Palm Beach, FL.
The ATK Missile Products include: Hellfire Propulsion System; IM Hellfire Propulsion System; Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System Advanced Warhead (GMLRS AW), FMU-143 electronic bomb fuze; Solid Divert and Attitude Control System for SM-3; Third-stage Rocket Motor for SM-3; Thrust-vector Electronic Control System (TVECS); and the Javelin Launch Tube Assembly (LTA) .
DPA- What is the immediate focus for ATK in the Indian programmes? What all capabilities ATK intends to showcase during Defexpo 2014?
JJ- Transfer of Technology (Co-Production opportunities) Precision Guidance for Artillery and Mortars, small, medium and large caliber ammunition and medium caliber gun systems, multi option fuzing technologies and border defense counter mobility system.
DPA- Coming to the defence trade in India, what all ATK products and Technology have edge over other offerings?
JJ- Our precision guidance kits for artillery and mortars are the first fielded systems to the U.S. Army that transform existing stockpiled projectiles into precision weapons. Our large caliber ammunition is considered the world's best and we have type-classified the majority of ammunition used throughout the progression of the Abrams main battle tank to include the M829A3 kinetic energy round as well as currently developing the next generation KE penetrator round. Our Bushmaster chain guns for air, ground and naval weapons stations are deployed on platforms around the world and are prized for their accuracy, reliability and ease of integration.
DPA- Any other specific programme can you refer to in the context of Indian Army potential requirements?
JJ- ATK Armament Systems offers a complete border defense munition systems for large area vehicle denial as well as networked, man in the loop munition systems for area/base defense.
DPA- How would you rate the potential where ATK can assist Indian Defence in next 10 and next 20 years? Is ATK prepared to undertake transfer of technology to India and help establish production line? Has such practice been adopted for other countries if so the experiences?
JJ- A successful partnership involves not only a transfer of technology but a partnership that will enhance existing capabilities today and meet any future partner requests that will help grow sovereign defense capabilities well into the future. As a leading developer and producer of small, medium and large caliber ammunition for the U.S. military, ATK understands that creating and sustaining the infrastructure necessary to maintain a domestic ammunition supply is a key component of a sound national defense and security strategy. ATK also understands the steps necessary to develop, maintain and set the conditions for future growth that are necessary to create a viable and affordable ammunition manufacturing complex that will serve both near term requirements and long term expectations. ATK possesses the expertise and experience necessary to provide allied partners the ability to create an entirely new ammunition or medium caliber cannon production capability or enhance existing facilities to enable increased production capacity, greater efficiency and profitability as well as product line expansions. ATK's co-production experience benefits the customer who desires a world-class ammunition manufacturing capability through providing the shortest path to fully indigenous operations using a staged approach that rapidly establishes or increases ammunition production while maintaining operational budgets.
DPA- Can you tell us about your immediate plans for Indian market and cooperation with Indian Industry? What is your perception about forming JV/ Collaboration in defence in India?
JJ- ATK prides itself as a partner of choice for developing relationships in cooperation with allied government and industry. We have proven relationships in creating coproduction success for medium and large caliber ammunition with allied nations to help increase their sovereign defense capabilities. We would gladly explore helping the Indian government expand their internal defense capabilities either through direct acquisition of our products or through co-production opportunities. We also have expertise in working with our (U.S.) government to move partnerships in transfer of technology along to completion through our relationships with U.S. government development and acquisition organizations.
DPA- What technological edge ATK Multi Option Fuze has over the normal Electronic Fuze?
JJ- The M782 is an inductively set proximity, time, and delay after impact, and point detonating (PD) fuze. It is operable with all existing and developmental artillery systems (105mm and 155mm). It is operable with all bulk-filled projectiles, such as high-explosive rounds or illuminating rounds. Features and Benefits:

» 20 year shelf life
DPA - What are the core technologies in ATK Precision Guided Ammunition and how much it can be shared? What is the contribution level towards infusion of technological knowhow?
JJ - ATK's PGK solution, features a highly effective GPS-based, fixed-canard guidance approach, with gun-hardened electronics, self-generated power (no battery required), and a minimum number of moving parts that not only meets but exceeds current U.S. program requirements for accuracy, effectiveness, range and cost. The program currently passed Milestone C and is in Low Rate Initial Production. ATK was granted the rights to demonstrate the capabilities during testing to allied partners who are interested in seeking a precision guidance capability for existing artillery projectiles.
